On August 16, 2021, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) released a warning to the public that extra precaution must be taken, particularly for those with certain health problems, as volcanic smog (vog) and high emission of sulfur dioxide (S02) were observed in the Taal Volcano area. S02 (sulfur dioxide) emission averaged 5,675 tonnes on August 15, and vog was observed over Taal Volcano and its vicinity.
Oftentimes, when Volcanic activity occurs, SO2 levels in the air increase and vog fills the air which can cause serious health concerns to individuals near and around the area.
Here, to share with us more about what vog is and how we can avoid it, is Maria Concepcion L. Barairo, a Science Research Specialist from the Volcano Monitoring & Eruption Prediction Division of PHIVOLCS.
