About the USA IBC
Founded in 1964, the International Ballet Competition first premiered at Varna, Bulgaria. The popularity of the event quickly spread throughout the world, finding its way to Russia and Japan in the late sixties. In 1975, renowned American ballerina Thalia Mara moved to Mississippi where she was commissioned to establish a ballet school. As part of her development plan, she convinced city leaders to bring the internationally-acclaimed competition to Jackson, In 1978, the state became the tournament’s official home, when Mara and nonprofit organization Mississippi Ballet International, Inc. (MBI) produced the first International Ballet Competition in the United States.
Competing at the USAIBC has been compared to the Olympics, as dancers undergo a series of rigorous tests to showcase their talent and limits. Only the brightest names in the international dance scene are invited to participate. Despite undertaking numerous high stake challenges, dancers will be given the chance to audition and perform for the heads of the world’s leading ballet companies. Among them are The Joffrey Ballet, The Philadelphia Ballet and the Washington Ballet. Dancers will also be given the chance to participate in special activities such as masterclasses and technical rehearsals.
