Celebrating Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights

Fiona Malca
Jewish Women's Association, Beit Yaacov Synagogue

The celebration of Hanukkah is a Jewish festival celebrated for eight days. The word translates to “Dedication” in Hebrew and commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, after the Jewish people, led by Judah Maccabee, rose up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in what is known as The Maccabean Revolt.

Also called “The Festival of Lights,” it commemorates a miracle witnessed by Judah Maccabee and the Jews who were rededicating the temple but equally important is that Hanukkah brings light, joy and warmth to the homes to those who observe this celebration, recalling the miracle with candles, special food, family & friends.

Join Fiona Malca of the Jewish Women’s Association in Manila and a member of the Beit Yaacov Synagogue, as she warmly shares the origin of this Jewish celebration, the way in which it is celebrated and invites us all to recognize how there is a light that always exists even in the darkest of times.
