This March 2024, Ballet Philippines will launch LIMANG DAAN, a ballet depicting the struggles and transcendence of Filipina women over the country’s 500-year history. Its creation story began with a video performance in 2022, produced under the patronage of Salcedo Auctions.
In 2022, Ballet Philippines, through the patronage of Salcedo Auctions, staged LIMANG DAAN, a short video performance depicting 500 years of cross-cultural encounters in which Philippine art and culture was heavily influenced by Spain. Choreographed by Ballet Philippines’ Guest Choreographer Joseph Phillips, and performed together with then Ballet Philippines Principal Dancer Denise Parungao-Phillips, the performance aimed to paint a picture of the tumultuous history that has shaped our nation today.
This coming March 2024, Ballet Philippines will close its 54th season with a full-length ballet loosely-inspired by the dance film. The new iteration of LIMANG DAAN follows the libretto of filmmaker and writer, Moira Lang. It follows a series of cross-generational heroines who mirror one another through their experiences of pain, suffering and transcendence over the centuries.
Ballet Philippines has also tapped two iconic local artists to collaborate in the forthcoming ballet. Renowned fashion designer JC Buendia will create the company’s costumes. Music for this ballet will be written by established composers, Erwin Romulo and Malek Lopez.
Under the direction of Ballet Philippines Creative Director Mikhail “Misha” Martynyuk, LIMANG DAAN promises to be a show that not only features excellence in Philippine dance and artistry. It will also spark a compelling dialogue on the patriarchy and struggles that women have endured throughout our complex history.
